Rowan has always been very similar to Jason but it's even more evident now. He loves to paint and color but somehow it always ends up very messy, as evident in the pictures below. Thank goodness for washable paint.
Rowan isn't satisfied with only one color. He will pick each one up, use it for a bit and then move to a new one. During a few desperate moments, I've even handed him a pen and crumpled up receipt and he's happy.

Now to change subjects...for as many meltdowns and temper tantrums Rowan has, he's also had some very sweet, endearing moments. Any time he sees a picture of Jason or I, he points to it and says "Mama" or "Dada" and smiles really big. Several times over the past few days, he's asked "where's Dada?" if Jason is gone. I've learned to take the good and bad behavior together.

His vocabulary is rapidly expanding but he still doesn't like to talk. You can point to something and ask him what it is or flip through flash cards, and he will identify everything correctly but he doesn't in turn use the words. I guess I'll have to ask the pediatrician about it. Although he is stuck on calling any animal he can't identify a "cow" and continues to call a tree "a house." He's really good about saying "thank you" but he sometimes says it when he should say "excuse me." For example, he bumped into me with a car tonight, looked up and said "thank you! I keep reminding him to say "excuse me" but he's stuck on thank you.

Oh well, at least he's learning manners.
What do you see? A happy little toddler at the splash park?

I see a little (almost) 22 month old wearing a pair of size 18 month swim trunks that are obviously falling off.

It's no secret that Rowan has always been on the small side, and at one point, really small. Even though he's always been very healthy, it's been hard for me to move past his small size. When you have friends with kids the same age who weigh almost 30 pounds, it's hard. I've tried lately to pinpoint exactly why I can't move past it. It's sounds silly but I can vividly recall the day at his pediatrician's office when Rowan was labeled "failure to thrive." It's such a loaded term that conjures up images of sickly, thin babies who aren't being cared for properly. It mad me sad to think my child was being lumped into that group.

Fast forward to now and a toddler who will barely sit still long enough to eat. Some days he eats well and some days he doesn't, and I've realized there isn't a single thing I can do about it. He will eat when he's hungry. He will be fine. And in the meantime, thank goodness for adjustable waist shorts from Baby Gap!Elisabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08229987393239244964noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-91250567914872117122011-07-25T22:21:00.001-04:002011-07-25T22:25:15.242-04:00I'm Back! There are no excuses. Life and work and poor time management just got in the way. But I'm making myself do it now, if for no other reason than to remember the funny, sad, cute, incredibly frustrating things that happen on a daily basis around here.

For example - the fact the the post below written in November of last year could have been written yesterday. Except now Rowan gets up even earlier, like 5:30am or 6am. I can't ignore it like before, when he would just whine some from his crib. He would usually drift off back to sleep for another hour or so. Yes, I admit it. I was one of those moms who let her child whine for a bit before getting out of bed. But I'm also a believer in cry-it-out for babies, so I guess it all goes hand in hand. Now that Rowan is out of the crib, he just gets out of bed, opens his door and comes into our room. Then he stands next to the bed and taps me and says, "mama, mama, mama" over and over again until I roll over.

Have you ever seen the "Family Guy" episode where Stewie drive Lois crazy? It's kinda like that.

Several people have suggested I just put him in the bed with us and let him go back to sleep. Yeah, that's not going to happen. Rowan can't be still when he sleeps and I would probably end up with a black eye from getting kicked or something. I assumed the early mornings and lack of sleep would have ended by now. I obviously assumed wrong. Hopefully this is just a phase and will pass soon. My lovely mom always says, "This too shall pass."Elisabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08229987393239244964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-80522641219611490442010-11-27T20:12:00.006-05:002010-11-27T20:36:25.065-05:00In the MorningRowan has always been an early riser. If he sleeps until 6:30am, I'm overjoyed. Most of the time, he wakes up at 6:04am. Sometimes, it's as early as 5:30am. If it's the weekend and it's earlier than 6:30am, I'll get him out of the crib and put him in bed with us. Sometimes he'll doze off for another 30 minutes or so, but most of the time he tries to jump up and down or hit your face until you pay attention to him. And he isn't one of those kids who like to lounge around in the morning drinking coffee. Once he's up, he's up and ready to go.

Jason decided to document Rowan the other weekend. No real excuses, except normal, busy life stuff.
So here's a brief catch-up on Rowan's latest happenings at 13 1/2 months:

Walks sometimes, crawls sometimes. Still working on walking 100% of the time

Moved up to the 1 year old group at his "school," which was a difficult adjustment but seems to be doing better now.

Still no real words, just makes a bunch of noises and sounds. Although I swear he says "I got it!" and bathtub.

Still gets up at an ungodly hour of 6am. If he sleeps to 6:30am, we're ecstatic.

Loves petting and playing with the dogs but we're still working on being gentle.

Eats great most of time, which is a nice change. In fact, at the last parent-teacher meeting at school a few weeks ago, they said he was one of the best eaters in his class. Go figure.

Loves chicken, turkey, cheese, eggs, yogurt, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, sausage, cheerios, goldfish, french fries, milk, mashed potatoes, melon, bananas and any kind of bread or crackers. Not crazy about carrots or beef.

Favorite toys include anything he can push or ride on, trucks, balls, blocks and anything that he can throw or make noise with. He also like looking at books with pictures of animals. He has started getting books down and looking at the pictures.

That's all I can think of right now. Now that I'm back in the swing of things I promise to post on a regular basis.
Elisabethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08229987393239244964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-74491408726624180442010-04-06T22:55:00.000-04:002010-04-06T22:55:02.679-04:00Monkey Butt

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-17438843470917063082010-04-06T22:52:00.000-04:002010-04-06T22:52:01.337-04:00Feed Me

We started Rowan on solids a few weeks ago. The previous attempts at getting him to eat cereal failed miserably, so I gave up and just decided to skip ahead. Initially, things went great. We started with sweet potatoes and he gobbled them up, half a jar at a time. Ever since them, he's been all over the map. Loves sweet potatoes, green beans and peas; hates squash and pears; still iffy on carrots and apples. If he likes it, he will grab the spoon out of my hand and attempt to feed himself and suck down a whole jar in no time. And if he doesn't like it, he clamps his mouth shut and refuses to eat. It can get ugly, as he's mastered his fake cough that quickly turns to gagging and then puking on the floor. It's hard to believe you've been here 6 months. Time has really flown by, although I will admit that the first few months were rough. It was hard to imagine you as you are now – a happy, curious little boy who loves to smile and play with daddy.

Over the past 6 months, I have watched you change more and more each day. So much of you and your personality are the same as your dad’s. I sometimes wonder where I am in you. You even have the same hairline as him.

You can now roll from you tummy to your back and decided sleeping on your side is fun. Early in the mornings you often roll around in your crib or kick the rails. We can hear you laughing while you do it. You can almost sit up on your own and like “standing” up on your legs. You love playing with your toys and are much more interested in the dogs now. Lucy often visits you when you’re playing in your exersaucer and you try to pet her. It’s so cute to watch your little hand stretch out to meet her.

You started eating food a couple of weeks ago. So far you’ve tried sweet potatoes, pears, green beans, squash and carrots. You didn’t really care for the squash. Since you started eating food, you don’t seem to like your bottles anymore, which makes mommy very frustrated. You probably don’t realize it but the doctors think you’re too small. You’re smaller than other babies your age so you need to drink all your milk to grow big and strong.

I love coming home from work and seeing your smiling face and big blue eyes. Your face lights up and you start kicking and waving your arms and legs. Daddy says you do the same thing for him when he picks you up from school each day. I think it’s your way of saying “I love you.”

Happy 6 month birthday Rowan! We love you very much!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-62425048112738876642010-01-18T08:31:00.001-05:002010-01-18T15:59:02.075-05:00We're still alive! So, I'm just going to skip past the fact that I've been slack with blogging for the past 2 months. Between the holidays and going back to work in late December, we've been really busy.

Here's the latest with Rowan - at 3 1/2 months we've finally broke the 12 pound mark and are starting to outgrow 0-3 month clothes. He's started daycare and seems to really like it there and the "teachers" seem to like him so I'm happy with the decision. He's still eating about every 3 hours (except at night) and eats 5.5 to 6 ounces. He goes down for the night by 8 and I usually dream feed him around 10:30pm. He's up at 6:30am during the week but sometimes will sleep until 7am or so on the weekend. Rowan likes to be held in a sitting position and watch things. He loves to "talk" in his funny babbling way. He gives big smiles when you make silly faces or tickle his feet. He's discovered his hands and loves to chew and suck on them. He plays with his fingers and has started to pick up his rattles and attempts to put them in his mouth. He also likes to sit in his Bumbo chair and look at the toys we put on the tray.

Oh, happy birthday Jason! We love you!
I bought the costume several months ago and it fit - for the most part. The head was kinda big though. I'm not sure who though a baby would have a head that big. I wanted to take pictures outside but it was almost 80 yesterday and we though Rowan might cook outside wearing a fleece costume.

I can't believe that Rowan is 4 weeks old today! I've probably had one of the best days ever with Rowan. In some ways, he seems like a different child today. And after the day we had yesterday, I was ready to send him to live with GiGi or something.
Here are some of the highlights:

Slept from 11pm to 3:30am last night. Woke up to eat and went back to sleep until 7am. Ate again and naped until 9am.

Fussed and cried very little except when I was in the shower.

Spent 30 minutes laying in his crib and stared at the ceiling fan and light.

Slept in the carseat/stroller for 2 1/2 hours while I got my hair cut and colored and eyebrows waxed. Wasn't even phased by the numerous hair dryers going on around him.

Played with rattle toys and stared at his picture book for 1 1/2 hours before falling asleep.

I guess there is still plenty of time left today for it all to go downhill. But let's hope it doesn't. And if it does, Jason can deal with it tonight!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1507258769406464472.post-77396144881866780622009-10-27T14:55:00.000-04:002009-10-27T14:55:20.363-04:00Does a baby get in the way of watching football?Jason would say no...

What a week it's been! First the good stuff - Rowan had his 2 week check-up yesterday and he is making good progress gaining his weight back. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 1/2 oz, grew an inch in length and his head has grown an 1/2 inch around. The doctor said he looked great and we don't have to go back until December 2nd. We've also increased his feedings to 2 3/4 oz. since yesterday and we seem to getting closer to 3 hours between feedings instead of 2 1/2 hours.

This week we've also struggled with numerous 3+ hour fits of unrelenting screaming and crying. Jason refers to him as a rabid dog when he's had these. It doesn't matter what we did, he just screamed and screamed. At several times, I really felt like jumping out the window. The doctor gave us some good tips and we tried them out last night when he started to get fussy. Although they didn't completely stop it, Rowan did seem to stay alot calmer overall and not escalate to the "rabid dog" state. It was more in line with what I would call normal baby crying and fussing. So at this point, any progress is good and I hope it only gets better. He was actually asleep by 12:15am which allowed us both to get some sleep before he needed to eat again at 2:30am. The night feedings are going well - for the most part he eats and goes back to sleep fairly quickly.

I'm crossing my fingers things continue to get better. Otherwise, I might need a straight jacket.
But so far me, Rowan and the dogs are still alive and in one piece. Rowan has been much more awake today and managed to cry and scream for an hour and a half this afternoon. I ended up giving him part of another bottle and he finally feel asleep. Maybe he's going through a growth spurt - he's been eating today like a wild, starved animal.

On the downside, the dogs got into the trash and managed to tear some diapers into a million small pieces. Oh well, I needed to vacuum anyway. Rowan Reece Anders came into the world on October 2nd at 9:02am. He promptly started screaming and peed on the doctor. It's now been a week and I can't imagine life without him. We continue each day to figure each other out and it's a learning process. But that's ok - what else will I do the next 12 weeks while I'm off work?!
